Video Summary
The NGMA Grants Management Virtual Learning session, held on December 8th, focused on critical updates to SAM.gov, including the transition from the DUNS number to the Unique Entity Identifier (UEI). Andrew Goldschmidt, NGMA Executive Director, welcomed attendees and highlighted upcoming trainings and the January session aimed at simplifying grant explanations. The presentation was moderated by Sam Twyman from Crow LLP, emphasizing their expertise in public sector consulting and government compliance.

Salome Ghorbani, GSA lead program manager, delivered a comprehensive overview of SAM.gov, explaining the modernization efforts consolidating multiple legacy systems into a single platform. Key topics included the new federal mandate replacing the DUNS number with a SAM-generated 12-character alphanumeric UEI, effective April 4, 2024. Entities already registered in SAM.gov have their UEI assigned; those with only a DUNS number but not registered must obtain their UEI via SAM.gov, with the process integrated into entity registration workflows post-April 4th.

Salome demonstrated how to register for a UEI, clarified that SAM.gov registrations are free, and detailed the search functionalities, including upcoming improvements to keyword search and filters. She highlighted the importance of ensuring systems can handle the empty DUNS field after the transition and encouraged participation in the Technical Interface Community for system updates.

The session included live Q&A addressing common concerns, such as entity visibility on SAM.gov, role management, and the impact of the transition on subawardees. Resources like the Federal Service Desk and interactive guides on Interact.gsa.gov were recommended for support. The presentation emphasized early compliance actions, system readiness, and effective communication to facilitate a smooth transition to the UEI system. A webcast of the session will be made available on the NGMA website.
