November 2026 | The 15% De Minimis Rate: Are You Applying It Correctly?
Details

The 15% de minimis indirect cost rate may sound simple, but applying it correctly requires an understanding of the Modified Total Direct Cost (MTDC) base. This practical session explores common areas of confusion such as knowing: (1) what costs can/cannot be included, (2) how to apply the rate correctly, and (3) why a written local policy can provide reasonable assurance to awarding agencies and auditors that the recipient is using the rate correctly.

Attendees will receive both a downloadable template to create their own one-page de minimis local policy with guidance during the presentation, and a copy of a sample rate policy for reference.

Learning Objectives:

  • Distinguish direct and indirect costs when applying the de minimis indirect cost rate.
  • Explain the Modified Total Direct Cost (MTDC) base and how it affects calculation of the 15% de minimis rate.
  • Develop a one-page local policy or certification to support consistent application of the de minimis rate.
